Ultrasound Therapy in Indirapuram

Therapeutic ultrasound delivers high-frequency sound waves into soft tissue through a gel-coated treatment head. It's been used in physiotherapy for decades. Evidence for its benefit is mixed, so we use it selectively, for specific soft tissue problems, and never as the whole treatment.

What it does

The treatment head produces sound waves well above the range of hearing. In continuous mode they gently warm deeper tissues such as tendons and joint capsules. In pulsed mode the heating is minimal, and the intended effect is on cell activity involved in healing.

You feel very little: perhaps mild warmth, or nothing at all. The therapist keeps the head moving over the area throughout.

Where it fits

Ultrasound has been used for tendinopathies, ligament sprains, carpal tunnel syndrome and scar tissue. Research findings are inconsistent. Some conditions show modest benefit in trials; others show none beyond placebo.

That's why we don't build treatment around it. Loading exercise is the main treatment for tendon problems, and strength and balance training are central for sprains. Ultrasound may be added where it seems to help an individual, and dropped if it doesn't.

Safety

We avoid ultrasound over a pregnant abdomen, the eyes, the front of the neck, active cancer, areas of infection or DVT, and over growing bone in children. Care is needed over metal implants and areas of reduced sensation.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same as a scan ultrasound?
Same basic physics, different purpose and settings. Diagnostic ultrasound makes images. Therapeutic ultrasound is aimed at treating tissue.
How many sessions will I need?
If it's used, typically a handful of sessions alongside your exercise programme.
Does it heal tendons faster?
The evidence isn't strong enough to say that. Progressive loading exercise is what reliably improves tendon problems.
What is Ultrasound Therapy?

Ultrasound therapy delivers high-frequency sound waves into soft tissue through a gel-coated head to support healing and ease pain in tendons, ligaments and joint capsules.

Who can benefit from Ultrasound Therapy?

People with tendon, ligament and soft tissue injuries such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis and sprains.

What conditions can Ultrasound Therapy help with?

It commonly helps with tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, supraspinatus tendinitis, ankle sprain, trigger finger and de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another common use.

What are the benefits of Ultrasound Therapy?

Mild warmth and pain relief in deeper tissues, used as a support to exercise.

How does Ultrasound Therapy work?

Continuous mode gently warms deep tissues; pulsed mode has minimal heat and is aimed at cellular healing processes.

What happens during an Ultrasound Therapy assessment?

We check the injured tissue, skin, sensation and medical history.

What happens during an Ultrasound Therapy session?

The area is positioned comfortably, Ultrasound Therapy is applied for about 5 to 10 minutes per area within a longer session, and it is usually followed by exercise such as wrist extensor stretch and calf stretch, because it works best as part of an active plan.

What treatments are used with Ultrasound Therapy?

It is usually combined with manual therapy, kinesio taping, shockwave therapy (ESWT) and interferential therapy (IFT), depending on your assessment and how you respond.

What exercises are commonly used with Ultrasound Therapy?

Common exercises include wrist extensor stretch, calf stretch, rotator cuff strengthening and isometric exercises. They start at a comfortable level and are progressed as you improve.

How long does an Ultrasound Therapy session take?

A session usually takes 5 to 10 minutes per area within a longer session.

How many Ultrasound Therapy sessions might be needed?

A limited number of sessions alongside exercise. Progress is reviewed regularly and the plan is adjusted as you improve.

How often should Ultrasound Therapy sessions be scheduled?

Two to three times a week.

Can Ultrasound Therapy help reduce pain?

It may help, though evidence is mixed; it works best with exercise.

Can Ultrasound Therapy improve mobility?

Indirectly, by warming tissue before stretching.

Can Ultrasound Therapy improve strength and flexibility?

No. Strength and flexibility come from the exercises your physiotherapist sets alongside it.

Can Ultrasound Therapy be provided at home?

Yes. Portable ultrasound units are used on home visits. We visit homes across Indirapuram, Vaishali, Vasundhara, Noida and Ghaziabad; see home visit physiotherapy.

Is Ultrasound Therapy suitable after surgery or injury?

Yes, for soft tissue healing once wounds are closed, avoiding growth plates and implants where advised.

Is Ultrasound Therapy suitable for older adults or children?

Yes for adults; avoided over growth plates in children.

What precautions should be considered with Ultrasound Therapy?

Not used over a pregnant abdomen, cancer, infection, the eyes, or DVT.

When should I consult a physiotherapist about Ultrasound Therapy?

When a tendon or ligament problem is slow to settle. You can book an assessment at our Indirapuram clinic or ask for a home visit.
