Hammer Toe Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Hammer toe is a toe that's bent at its middle joint, giving it a hammer-like shape. It usually affects the second, third or fourth toe and often develops alongside bunions or from tight footwear.
Causes
An imbalance between the muscles and tendons of the toe causes it to bend. Narrow or short shoes, high heels, bunions pushing on the second toe, and some neurological or arthritic conditions contribute.
In the early stages, the toe is flexible and can be straightened by hand. Over time, it can become rigid.
Symptoms
A visible bend in the toe, corns or calluses on the top of the bent joint from rubbing on shoes, and sometimes pain in the ball of the foot.
Treatment
Shoes with a deep, roomy toe box are the first step. Padding over corns and toe splints can reduce friction. For flexible hammer toes, exercises to stretch and strengthen the toe muscles, like picking up a towel with the toes, can help maintain flexibility.
Rigid or painful hammer toes that don't respond to conservative care may need surgery. Rehab afterwards focuses on reducing swelling and restoring walking.
Exercises often used for Hammer Toe
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
