Shoulder and Arm
Supraspinatus Tendinitis Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
The supraspinatus is the rotator cuff tendon that runs over the top of the shoulder and helps start lifting the arm. It's the one most often irritated by overhead work, lifting and repetitive reaching.
Tendinitis or tendinopathy?
The word tendinitis suggests inflammation. When tendons have been sore for more than a few weeks, examination of the tissue usually shows disorganised collagen and structural change rather than classic inflammation. That's why many clinicians prefer the term tendinopathy. The label matters less than what it implies: anti-inflammatories and rest rarely fix a tendon for good. Graded loading does.
Why this tendon
The supraspinatus sits in a relatively tight space and works hard whenever the arm is lifted away from the body. Calcium deposits sometimes form in it too, called calcific tendinitis, which can cause intense pain for a period.
Classic triggers include painting a ceiling, a sudden increase in gym work, repeated lifting of heavy files onto high racks, or bowling for hours in the nets.
What treatment looks like
First we reduce how irritated the tendon is. That means adjusting the aggravating activity and using isometric exercises, which often give short-term pain relief. Then we progress to slow strengthening through range, followed by faster and overhead work.
Shockwave therapy has reasonable support for calcific tendinitis and some chronic cases. Ultrasound, laser and taping can be used as supportive tools. The shoulder blade muscles are strengthened alongside the cuff, because a well-positioned shoulder blade gives the tendon more room to work.
How long it takes
Tendons adapt slowly. Improvement usually starts within two to four weeks, but full tendon capacity takes three months or more. Stopping the exercises as soon as pain eases is the most common reason it comes back.
Exercises often used for Supraspinatus Tendinitis
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
Frequently asked questions
Should I take painkillers and rest?
What is calcific tendinitis?
Are steroid injections a good idea?
What is Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
Supraspinatus tendinitis is irritation of the supraspinatus, the rotator cuff tendon that helps lift the arm.
What causes Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
Common causes include repetitive overhead activity, sudden increases in load, poor shoulder mechanics and age-related tendon changes.
What are the common symptoms of Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
Common symptoms include pain on the outer shoulder when lifting the arm, especially between shoulder and head height, and pain at night.
How is Supraspinatus Tendinitis diagnosed?
It is usually diagnosed with clinical examination with ultrasound if needed.
Can physiotherapy help with Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
Yes. Load management and progressive strengthening usually resolve it over several weeks. Our shoulder pain physiotherapy programme is built around this.
What are the goals of physiotherapy for Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
To settle pain, restore painless lifting and strengthen the rotator cuff.
What treatments may be used for Supraspinatus Tendinitis?
Treatment usually combines exercises such as shoulder abduction, shoulder external rotation and wall slides with ultrasound therapy, laser therapy (low-level laser) and shockwave therapy (ESWT). Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
