PCL Injury Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) stops the shin sliding backward under the thigh. It's stronger than the ACL and injured less often, typically by a direct blow to the front of the shin with the knee bent.

How it's injured

The classic cause is a dashboard injury, where the knee hits the dashboard in a car crash. Falling onto a bent knee, such as in football, kabaddi or a fall on stairs, can also do it.

PCL injuries are sometimes subtle. Swelling may be moderate and people often keep walking. Some aren't diagnosed until weeks later.

Symptoms

Pain at the back of the knee, swelling, and a feeling of looseness when going down stairs or slopes. Kneeling may be uncomfortable.

Rehabilitation

Most isolated PCL injuries are treated without surgery. Rehab centres on quadriceps strength, since the quadriceps pull the shin forward and help compensate for the damaged PCL. Early on we avoid exercises that stress the ligament, like heavy resisted hamstring curls, and sometimes use a brace that supports the back of the shin.

Balance, control and gradual return to running and sport follow over two to four months for most people. Combined injuries involving other ligaments may need surgery.

Exercises often used for PCL Injury

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

What are the common symptoms of PCL Injury?

Common symptoms include knee pain, swelling and a feeling of instability.

How is PCL Injury diagnosed?

It is usually diagnosed with clinical tests and MRI.
