Ankle Syndesmosis Ligament Injury Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

A syndesmosis injury, or high ankle sprain, damages the ligaments that hold the tibia and fibula together just above the ankle. It usually takes much longer to recover from than a typical sprain.

How it's different

A regular sprain rolls the foot inward. A high ankle sprain is usually caused by the foot twisting outward, often with the foot planted, as in football, cricket fielding or skiing. Pain is higher, above the ankle, and worse with pushing off and twisting.

These injuries can be missed early if assumed to be a normal sprain. Severe cases may involve separation of the bones and need surgical fixation.

Recovery timeline

High ankle sprains commonly take six to eight weeks or longer to return to sport, compared with shorter times for many regular sprains. Returning too early often leads to ongoing pain.

Rehabilitation

Early protection, often in a boot, limits twisting. As pain settles, we restore movement carefully, progressing to strength, balance and gradual loading of the push-off and twisting movements that stress the syndesmosis. Return to sport is based on symptom-free performance of sport-specific tasks.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
