Hand Fractures Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Hand fractures, including broken fingers and metacarpals, are very common. The small joints of the hand stiffen fast, so the aim is to protect the fracture only as long as needed and get movement going early.

Common types

Metacarpal fractures are breaks in the long bones of the palm. A boxer's fracture involves the fifth metacarpal, near the little finger knuckle, and often comes from punching a hard surface. Finger fractures (phalanges) happen from crush injuries, ball sports and falls.

Many are treated with a splint or buddy strapping. Unstable or rotated fractures may need wires or plates.

Why early movement matters

Finger joints can lose motion within a couple of weeks of immobilisation, and that stiffness can outlast the fracture itself. Surgeons often allow early protected movement, especially after fixation.

Rotation is also checked carefully. A fracture that heals twisted causes fingers to cross over each other when making a fist, which is a functional problem.

Rehabilitation

We manage swelling, work on individual joint range, use tendon gliding exercises and gradually build grip and pinch strength. Scar management is included after surgery. Wax therapy helps stiff joints before exercise.

Return to heavy gripping, contact sport or manual work is based on healing and strength. Most people regain good function within two to three months.

Exercises often used for Hand Fractures

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just buddy tape my finger?
For some stable fractures, yes. It should be assessed first to check alignment and rotation.
Why can't I make a full fist?
Joint stiffness and tendon adhesions are common after hand fractures. Specific exercises help.
When can I return to the gym?
Light use often resumes around six weeks, with heavy gripping later. Timing depends on healing.
What are Hand Fractures?

Hand fractures are breaks in the bones of the fingers or palm.

What causes Hand Fractures?

Common causes include falls, punches, sports injuries and crush injuries.

What are the common symptoms of Hand Fractures?

Common symptoms include pain, swelling, deformity and difficulty moving fingers.

How are Hand Fractures diagnosed?

It is usually diagnosed with X-rays.

Can physiotherapy help with Hand Fractures?

What are the goals of physiotherapy for Hand Fractures?

To restore finger movement, grip strength and dexterity.

What treatments may be used for Hand Fractures?

Treatment usually combines exercises such as grip strengthening and tendon gliding exercises with paraffin wax therapy and heat therapy (thermotherapy). Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
