Spina Bifida Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Spina bifida is a condition present from birth in which the spine and spinal cord don't form completely. Its effects range from none to significant weakness and sensory loss in the legs. Physiotherapy supports mobility and independence from infancy onward.

Types and effects

The mildest form, spina bifida occulta, is often found incidentally and causes no symptoms. The most significant, myelomeningocele, affects the spinal cord and nerves, causing leg weakness, sensory loss and often bladder and bowel issues. Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) is common with it.

The level of the spinal lesion largely determines function. Lower lesions often allow walking; higher ones may mean wheelchair use.

Physiotherapy across the lifespan

In infancy: positioning, range of motion, promoting head control, sitting and early mobility. In childhood: standing, walking with or without orthoses, wheelchair skills, strength and participation in play and school. In adolescence and adulthood: maintaining fitness, preventing contractures, managing weight and staying independent.

Skin care is important because of sensory loss; pressure sores can develop without being felt. We coordinate with medical teams on bracing, surgery and general health.

Exercises often used for Spina Bifida

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Will my child walk?
It depends on the level of the lesion. Many children walk, some with braces.
Is folic acid important?
Folic acid before and during early pregnancy reduces the risk of spina bifida.
Why is skin care important?
Reduced sensation means pressure sores may not be felt. Regular skin checks are essential.
What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is a birth condition where the spine and spinal cord do not form fully.

What causes Spina Bifida?

Incomplete closure of the neural tube in early pregnancy; low folate is a risk factor.

What are the common symptoms of Spina Bifida?

Common symptoms include weakness or paralysis of the legs, bladder and bowel problems.

How is Spina Bifida diagnosed?

It is usually diagnosed with prenatal scans or examination at birth.

Can physiotherapy help with Spina Bifida?

Yes. Physiotherapy supports mobility, strength and independence. Our pediatric physiotherapy programme is built around this.

What are the goals of physiotherapy for Spina Bifida?

To maximise mobility and independence and prevent complications.

What treatments may be used for Spina Bifida?

Treatment usually combines exercises such as weight bearing exercises, neurodevelopmental exercises and head control exercises with overhead track and harness therapy. Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
