Osgood-Schlatter Disease Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Osgood-Schlatter disease causes pain and a bony bump just below the kneecap in growing children and teenagers who play sport. It isn't a disease in the usual sense. It's a growth-plate irritation from repeated pulling by the patellar tendon.

Why it happens

During growth spurts, bones can lengthen faster than muscles and tendons adapt. The patellar tendon attaches to a growth plate on the shin, which is softer than mature bone. Repeated running, jumping and kicking pull on it and irritate it. Boys aged 10 to 15 and girls aged 8 to 13 are most affected.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the bony bump below the kneecap, worse during and after sport, kneeling and stairs. The bump may become more prominent. One or both knees can be affected.

Management

The key is load management rather than complete rest. We help families and coaches adjust training volume, particularly jumping and sprinting, so pain stays manageable. Ice after activity and a strap below the knee can help during sport.

Quadriceps, hamstring and calf flexibility, along with gentle strengthening, support recovery. Education matters: the condition usually settles once growth slows, though the bump may remain.

Exercises often used for Osgood-Schlatter Disease

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Should my child stop sport?
Usually not completely. Modifying training so pain stays mild is generally enough.
Will the bump go away?
The bump often remains, but pain usually resolves after growth finishes.
Is it serious?
No. It's a common self-limiting condition in active children.
What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Osgood-Schlatter disease is pain and swelling below the kneecap in growing children, where the tendon attaches to the shin.

What causes Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Common causes include repeated pulling of the tendon on the growth plate during growth spurts and sport.

What are the common symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Common symptoms include pain and a bump below the kneecap, worse with running and jumping.

How is Osgood-Schlatter Disease diagnosed?

It is usually diagnosed with clinical examination.

Can physiotherapy help with Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Yes. Load management and stretching help while growth continues. Our pediatric physiotherapy programme is built around this.

What are the goals of physiotherapy for Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

To manage pain, keep the child active and adjust sport load.

What treatments may be used for Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Treatment usually combines exercises such as hamstring stretch and quadriceps stretch with kinesio taping and cryotherapy (cold therapy). Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
