Lipedema Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Lipedema is a chronic condition, almost exclusively in women, where fat builds up symmetrically in the legs and sometimes the arms, sparing the feet and hands. It's often painful and easily bruised, and it's frequently mistaken for simple obesity or lymphedema.
How it differs
In lipedema, fat accumulates from the hips to the ankles, often with a clear cuff at the ankle while the feet remain slim. The affected areas may be tender, bruise easily and feel heavy. Dieting typically reduces fat elsewhere but not in the affected areas, which can be very frustrating.
It often begins or worsens around puberty, pregnancy or menopause, suggesting a hormonal link. Over time, lymphatic function can become affected too (lipo-lymphedema).
Management
There's no cure, but symptoms can be managed. Regular low-impact exercise, like swimming, water aerobics, cycling and walking, supports mobility and fitness. Compression garments may reduce discomfort and swelling. Manual lymphatic drainage can help if lymphatic involvement develops.
Joint pain, especially in the knees, is common because of altered walking and load. Strengthening and gait advice help.
Specialist medical and sometimes surgical input may be appropriate. Emotional support is important too, as many women have been told for years that it's simply a weight problem.
Exercises often used for Lipedema
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
