Tecar Therapy: How It Works and Who It Helps
Tecar therapy uses radiofrequency energy delivered through capacitive and resistive electrodes to warm tissues from within. It's popular in sports clinics. It's another way of delivering deep heat, with a hands-on element, and should be judged on the same basis as other heat treatments.
How it works
The capacitive mode concentrates energy in tissues with more water, such as muscle. The resistive mode targets denser tissue such as tendon, ligament and joint capsule. The therapist moves an electrode over the skin, often combining it with massage or active movement. A return plate completes the circuit.
What the evidence shows
Studies suggest Tecar can reduce pain and improve range of motion in the short term for some musculoskeletal conditions. Most trials are small, and it hasn't been clearly shown to outperform other heating methods combined with exercise.
It can be a comfortable way to prepare tissues for training. It isn't a substitute for loading exercise and graded return to sport.
Precautions
Similar to other electrical heating: not used with pacemakers, over a pregnant abdomen, over active cancer, infection or DVT, over areas of reduced sensation, or over metal implants in the treated area.
Please confirm with the clinic whether Tecar therapy is currently offered.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tecar the same as shortwave?
Is it used by sports teams?
How does it feel?
What is Tecar Therapy?
Tecar therapy uses radiofrequency energy through handheld electrodes to warm deep tissues, easing pain and stiffness and supporting recovery in muscles, tendons and joints.
Who can benefit from Tecar Therapy?
Athletes and active people with muscle and tendon injuries, and people with chronic joint and back pain.
What conditions can Tecar Therapy help with?
It commonly helps with muscle injuries, tendinitis, knee osteoarthritis, ankle sprain and lower back pain physiotherapy. Post-injury stiffness is another use.
What are the benefits of Tecar Therapy?
Deep warmth and pain relief, often combined with hands-on work and movement at the same time.
How does Tecar Therapy work?
The radiofrequency current creates heat from within the tissue, increasing blood flow and relaxing tight structures.
What happens during a Tecar Therapy assessment?
We check the injury and screen for metal implants, pacemakers and pregnancy.
What happens during a Tecar Therapy session?
The area is positioned comfortably, Tecar Therapy is applied for about 15 to 20 minutes within a session, and it is usually followed by exercise such as passive, assisted and active range of motion and stretching exercises, because it works best as part of an active plan.
What treatments are used with Tecar Therapy?
It is usually combined with manual therapy, sports physiotherapy and shockwave therapy (ESWT), depending on your assessment and how you respond.
What exercises are commonly used with Tecar Therapy?
Common exercises include passive, assisted and active range of motion, stretching exercises and isometric exercises. They start at a comfortable level and are progressed as you improve.
How long does a Tecar Therapy session take?
A session usually takes 15 to 20 minutes within a session.
How many Tecar Therapy sessions might be needed?
A few sessions alongside exercise. Progress is reviewed regularly and the plan is adjusted as you improve.
How often should Tecar Therapy sessions be scheduled?
Two to three times a week.
Can Tecar Therapy help reduce pain?
Yes. Pain relief is one of the main aims of treatment.
Can Tecar Therapy improve mobility?
Yes, by warming tissue before stretching.
Can Tecar Therapy improve strength and flexibility?
No. Strength and flexibility come from the exercises your physiotherapist sets alongside it.
Can Tecar Therapy be provided at home?
No. It requires clinic equipment.
Is Tecar Therapy suitable after surgery or injury?
Once healed, avoiding metal implants.
Is Tecar Therapy suitable for older adults or children?
Yes for adults with normal sensation.
What precautions should be considered with Tecar Therapy?
Not used with pacemakers, pregnancy, cancer, reduced sensation or over metal implants.
When should I consult a physiotherapist about Tecar Therapy?
When muscle or joint pain and stiffness need deeper heat than hot packs provide. You can book an assessment at our Indirapuram clinic or ask for a home visit.
