MCL Injury Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
The medial collateral ligament (MCL) runs along the inner side of the knee and resists the knee being pushed inward. It's one of the most commonly injured knee ligaments, and it heals better than most.
How it's injured
A blow to the outside of the knee, as in a football tackle, or a twisting fall that pushes the knee inward can stretch or tear the MCL. Skiers and wrestlers get it often. It can occur alone or with ACL and meniscal injuries.
MCL injuries are graded one to three. Grade one is a mild stretch, grade two a partial tear, grade three a complete tear.
Why most don't need surgery
The MCL has a good blood supply, so it heals well. Even many complete tears heal with conservative treatment. Surgery is usually reserved for complex injuries involving multiple ligaments.
Rehabilitation
Early on, we reduce pain and swelling and protect the ligament from sideways stress, sometimes with a hinged brace. Movement is encouraged early to prevent stiffness.
As healing progresses, we build quadriceps, hamstring and hip strength, then introduce balance, agility and sport-specific drills. Return to sport ranges from a few weeks for grade one to several months for grade three.
Exercises often used for MCL Injury
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

How is MCL Injury diagnosed?
It is usually diagnosed with clinical examination and sometimes MRI.
